Patient Rights and Responsibilities

At Serenity Home Care Niagara, we are committed to delivering compassionate, professional, respectful, and person-centered care. These are the rights and responsibilities of every client receiving services through our organization

Patient / Client Rights

  1. To be treated with dignity, compassion, and respect at all times.
  2. To receive care free from discrimination, harassment, neglect, or abuse.
  3. To privacy and confidentiality regarding all personal and medical information.
  4. To participate in all decisions involving care planning and services.
  5. To receive clear information regarding services, schedules, and costs.
  6. To consent to or refuse care, treatment, or services whenever legally permitted.
  7. To have cultural, spiritual, language, and religious preferences respected. To safe, clean, and professional care services.
  8. To voice complaints or concerns without fear of retaliation.
  9. To receive services from trained, competent, and qualified caregivers.
  10. To be informed of changes to care plans or services.
  11. To maintain independence and personal choices whenever possible.
  12. To respectful communication from all staff members.
  13. To have personal property treated respectfully. 
  14. To request caregiver changes when concerns arise.
  15. To access records and documentation as permitted by law.
  16. To be informed of emergency and safety procedures.
  17. To receive reliable and timely care services.
  18. To confidentiality during home visits and communications.
  19. To terminate services according to agency policy.


Patient / Client Responsibilities

  1. To provide accurate information regarding medical history, medications, and care needs.
  2. To participate in care planning and communicate goals or concerns.
  3. To treat caregivers and staff respectfully and professionally.
  4. To provide a safe working environment within the home.
  5. To notify the agency promptly regarding cancellations or schedule changes.
  6. To follow agreed-upon care recommendations whenever possible.
  7. To ask questions when instructions or care information are unclear.
  8. To communicate dissatisfaction respectfully so concerns can be addressed.
  9. To ensure pets are secured if necessary during visits.
  10. To maintain a smoke-free and safe environment during care visits.
  11. To safeguard valuables and personal belongings.
  12. To provide updated emergency contact information.
  13. To fulfill payment obligations as outlined in service agreements.
  14. To avoid threatening, abusive, or inappropriate behavior toward staff.
  15. To notify staff of infectious illnesses or home safety risks.
  16. To maintain functional equipment required for care when applicable.
  17. To support collaborative communication between caregivers and family members.
  18. To respect professional boundaries with all staff.

Serenity Home Care Niagara encourages open communication between clients, families, and staff. All concerns, complaints, or feedback are taken seriously and reviewed respectfully and promptly.
